Regular aerobic activity provides benefits for kitty companions.

Most indoor cats don’t get nearly enough exercise to keep their bodies fit and their minds stimulated. Keeping your cat well-exercised doesn’t have to cost much money — it just requires a bit of creativity, time and attention. One example: Turn mealtime into a workout session.

To help kitty stay fit, it’s essential to supply her with a cat tree. Empty paper bags and cardboard boxes are also a big hit with many cats.

Regular aerobic activity provides incredible benefits for your kitty companion, including helping to maintain a healthy weight, keeping muscles supple and strong, promoting organ health, and curing boredom and undesirable behaviors.

Engaging your cat’s natural hunting instincts with toys, chase games or an at-home obstacle course can add extra activity and mental stimulation to her day.

Toys and Creative Play

Toys don’t have to be expensive to fill kitty’s toybox. You just have to think like a cat and use toys that draw out his hunting instincts. A piece of string wrapped around the end of a stick that you drag on the ground will bring out the stalker in almost any cat.

Ping-pong balls or small balls of paper flicked across the floor can also encourage physical activity. If you happen to be artsy-craftsy, you can even make your own inexpensive kitty toys like yarn balls.

A sturdy acrylic yarn stands up well to rough cat handling and is washable. Wool is another good fabric for this purpose; when you run it through the washing machine, the heat and friction felts the fibers into one tough surface.

Climbing and Exploration

Cats love to climb, so every home with a kitty in residence should have at least one multi-level cat tree or tower. Whenever she goes up it or uses it to sharpen her claws, she’ll get in some good stretching, scratching and climbing time.

Try-to-find-me games are also a great way to encourage physical activity. Cats often think boxes and bags much more fun than whatever came in them, and they can get a good little workout investigating them.

An empty gift bag with the handles cut off and some tissue paper makes a fun and fascinating little hiding spot. Many cats also absolutely love to “hide” in boxes, especially ones they don’t quite fit into.

Outdoor Adventures and Agility Training

Just because your cat lives indoors doesn’t mean she doesn’t need or deserve to spend time outside. Training your cat to walk on a harness and leash can be an ideal way to allow her safe, controlled access to the great outdoors and increase her physical activity level at the same time.

Consider “at-home” kitty agility training, which can be a fun and engaging way to encourage physical activity. Feline agility competitions offer some good ideas for activities that can be tried at home to get indoor cats off the couch and moving.

Using something chase-able, like a feather or other type of wand, can entice your cat to engage in more physical activity and make her way over, under, around and through obstacles on a course.

As you encourage your cat to engage in physical activity, you may notice her being more active and playful, which can help strengthen the bond you share with her. With a little creativity and motivation, you can help your cat stay physically fit and mentally stimulated, even indoors.

Regular exercise can also help to improve your cat’s overall health and wellbeing. It can help to reduce the risk of obesity and related health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease, and can also help to improve their immune system and reduce the risk of illness.

It is also important to note that cats are individuals, and what works for one cat may not work for another. It is essential to tailor your approach to your cat’s unique needs and personality, and to be patient and consistent in your efforts to encourage physical activity.

With a little creativity and motivation, you can help your cat stay physically fit and mentally stimulated, even indoors. By providing a stimulating environment, a variety of toys and activities, and a safe and comfortable space to rest and relax, you can help your cat live a happy and healthy life.
